Community News

Facebook & Bebo are free-access social networking web sites which are very popular with the younger members of our community.  Facebook is open to everyone aged 13 and over, and for Bebo there is no age restriction.

The concept of networking and socialising is good, but parents/carers need to monitor their children to ensure that they are aware of the safety issues in using these sites. The format of these sites are that everyone has  a profile of themselves, and can have photo albums on the site.  Although site users can only access someone else's profile if they are accepted as a  friend, this does not guarantee that they are 'safe'.  There are always people out there ready to abuse  and use if they can.

We at the Association urge young community members that are using Facebook and Bebo to be very careful in what infomation they put on their profile and the kind of photos that are put in the photo albums. It has come to our notice that some of our  members may be displaying inappropriate photos of themselves which is religiously and culturally unacceptable!

How do you know that the friend you accepted is trustworthy and that they are not showing your information to other people?

Remember that you MUST respect yourselves, the background and the community you come from. Some parents in the communityare probably not aware of Facebook and Bebo, and may not have the skills to monitor their children. Children of those parents should have enough sense to behave in a appropriate manner.

Remeber, nothing stays hidden or quiet for too long!  If you are an older brother or sister of younger siblings, please take an interest and monitor what sites they are using, what profiles they have, etc.

Levels of Personal Allowance

The amount of your Personal Allowance depends on:

· your age

· your total income in the tax year if you are 65 or over

Total income means everything you receive from all taxable sources. That means you need to include things like pensions and interest on your savings in a building society before the tax has been taken off.

If you become 65 or 75 during the year to 5 April 2010, you are entitled to the allowance for that age group.

Note: If your income is over the income limit, the age-related allowance is reduced by half of the amount - £1 for every £2 - you have over that limit, until the basic rate allowance is reached. You'll always get the basic allowance, whatever the level of your income.

So if, for example, you're 66 and have an income of £23,400 - £500 over the limit - Your age-related Personal Allowance will be reduced by £250 to £9,240.

Childcare

Free Childcare scheme for parents in training or learning.

A new scheme has been launched to provide free childcare for 50,000 workless parents who are in training or learning.

Helping parents back to work

The aim of the Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work Scheme is to help workless parents back to work by providing free childcare while they are in training or learning.

The scheme is open to half a million families in England with:

· one partner in work

· an annual household income of £20,000 or less per year

· a child or children aged 14 or under

· a child or children aged 18 or under with disabilities

Eligible parents can choose which course is going to give them the right skills to get back into work, ranging from from a short refresher in maths or a more formal qualification in a range of subjects from social care to teaching.

An advisor will help parents to enrol for their chosen course and will advise parents on the childcare options available to them.

Children's Minister Beverley Hughes said: "We know that for those who can, work remains the best way to lift families and children out of poverty. We also know that high quality childcare not only supports parents back into employment but that it promotes and improves positive outcomes for children, helping to ensure that all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, can reach their full potential."

Summer Volunteering Opportunity

British Bangladeshi Professionals Volunteer Programme.

BRAC UK has been working in partnership with BRAC in Bangladesh, VSO UK and the UK Department for International Development to develop Porishōd, a programme which provides British Bangladeshi professionals and skilled workers with an opportunity to offer their skills to the development of Bangladesh and raise awareness about development issues here in the UK.

Placements are allocated based on the skills applicants have to support BRAC in Bangladesh to improve and innovate their holistic range of development programmes.  The majority of the placements will take place at BRAC’s head office in Dhaka where volunteers will be able to effect most change by working with programme or departmental staff.  Many of the placements also include some exposure to BRAC’s work at the field level so that volunteers can experience the wider context in which their placements are set.  For more information on BRAC, please visit their website: www.brac.net

An application form can be requested by contacting the Porishōd Programme Officer, Jebi Rahman: jebi@bracuk.net
